Spotted, I'm not spotted! I have freckles...
It's amazing, the stuff you can buy on the internet. A few days ago I was searching for a candy manufacture's website when I came across canned Spotted Dick. Yeah, the name is funny, but seriously why spotted?
What is Spotted Dick? It is a traditional English dessert. It is steamed or boiled suet pudding with raisins or currants in it. Those Brits really know how to get down with their desserts.
Anyway, cool dessert or not, it has to be a shameful thing even for them to see it in a can for sale on the internet.
Now the supposed reason for the dick part is as follows: "Dick"is derived from "pudding". Sources all pretty much agree with the derivation, without being specific how. They can see "pudding" become "puddink" becoming "puddick" and then just "dick." My problem with this is the spotted part. I mean why didn't they just call it raisin dick or currant dick. Why spotted? Why not freckled? I guess freckled dick sounds even more naughty....I think Ben and Jerry should take a UK tour. What do you think?
